Consumer prices in Lima Metropolitan area increased 0.10% in January of 2026

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that during the first month of the current year, the Consumer Price Index of Lima Metropolitan area increased 0.10% compared to the month of December of 2025. The annual variation (February 2025 – January 2026) reached 1.70%.
In the technical report Variation of the Price Indicators of the Economyis explained that the result of the month of January is based in the greater prices registered, mainly, in the following divisions of consumption: Restaurants and hotels (0.33%), Goods and different services (0.23%) and Foods and non-alcoholic beverages (0.11%).
Likewise, it increased the prices of Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance (0.33%), Clothing items and footwear (0.11%), Recreation and culture (0.10%), Alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics (0.07%), Communications (0.06%), Education (0.04%) and Health (0.03%). On the other hand, it decreased the prices of the divisions Transportation (-0.25%) and Accommodation, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (-0.03%).
The increase of prices registered in Foods and Non-Alcoholic beverages was due to the increase in meat (1.9%) such as eviscerated chicken (4.3%), chicken cuts: leg (3.4%), wings (2.1%) and breast (1.6%), as well as eviscerated hen (2.7%). In addition, vegetables, legumes, including potato and other tubers (1.8%) such as yellow sweet potato (9.6%), leek (8.4%), potato: Huayro (6.5%), colored (6.3%), yellow (5.0%) and white (4.0%); yucca (6.1%), carrot (5.9%), tomato (5.3%), Macre squash (3.3%) and green peas (3.2%).
In addition, oils and fats (0.5%) such as Olive oil (3.0%) and packaged vegetable oil (0.3%); coffee, tea and cacao (0.4%) due to the greater prices in instant coffee (0.5%) and ground roasted coffee (0.2%); mineral waters, soft drinks, fruit and legumes juices (0.3%) such as carbonated beverages (0.4%) and table water (0.2%).
Meanwhile that it decreased the prices of fishes and seafood (-3.1%) such as hake (-9.3%), horse mackerel (-8.6%), Bonito fish (-5.5%), mullet (-3.8%) and mackerel (-1.3%); milk, cheese and eggs (-3.0%) such as chicken eggs (-11.2%); other food products (-0.5%) such as yellow grounded chili (-11.9%), grounded Rocoto chili (-4.6%) and grounded garlic (-4.2%); and fruits (-0.3%) such as white grape (-18.3%), passion fruit (-14.6%), strong avocado (-7.8%), black grape (-7.1%), lemon (-6.8%) and silk banana (-2.5%).
In Restaurants and hotels increased the prices of food service in restaurants and similar facilities (0.4%) such as fried pork (0.7%), menu in restaurants (0.6%), ceviche (0.4%), grilled chicken (0.3%), grilled meat (0.3%), breaded chicken (0.3%), breakfast in restaurants (0.3%) and served ice-cream (0.3%).
The increase of prices in Goods and different services is based in the greater prices registered in jewellery, wall clocks and wristwatches (3.2%) such as gold jewelry (5.1%); hairdressing salons and establishments of personal care (0.6%) such as haircut for women (1.4%) and haircut for men (0.7%); aesthetic care of hands and feet (0.6%) and hair dyes (0.4%); in addition, it increased the prices of other devices, articles and products for personal attention (0.1%) such as men’s cologne (0.5%), cosmetics (0.3%) and disposable diapers (0.3%).
In the division of Transportation decreased the prices of transportation of passengers by air (-4.6%) such as domestic air ticket (-17.5%); fuels for vehicles (-0.4%) such as liquefied petroleum gas for vehicles (-0.9%), Diesel oil (-0.8%) and gasohol (-0.4%); and transportation of passengers by road (-0.1%) such as interprovincial omnibus fares (-13.7%) and taxi fare (-0.8%).
Products with high incidence in the monthly variation of prices
During January of 2026, the variation of Consumer Price Index in Lima Metropolitan area was influenced by the increase of prices in eviscerated chicken, menu in restaurants, white potato and orange juice, as well as in omnibus and microbus fare, that together contributed with 0.161 percentage points to the result of the month. Meanwhile that it decreased the prices of chicken eggs, strong avocado and passion fruit; as well as domestic air ticket and interprovincial omnibus fares.
Products with higher increase of prices
During the first month of the year, from the 586 products that make up the family basket, 311 increased their price, 93 decreased and 182 did not showed variation in their prices. Those that registered greater increase were: orange juice (23.35%), yellow sweet potatoes (9.62%), leek (8.37%), Huayro potato (6.55%), colored potato (6.25%), mango (6.11%), yuca (6.07%) and carrot (5.88%).
Meanwhile that it decreased the prices of green onion (-28.18%), Escabeche yellow chili (-19.07%), white grape (-18.28%), domestic air ticket (-17.52%), passion fruit (-14.58%), interprovincial omnibus fare (-13.71%), grounded yellow chili (-11.95%) and chicken eggs (-11.16%).
Consumer prices without foods and energy increased 0.04%
The variation of Consumer Price Index of Lima Metropolitan area without considering foods and energy (underlying inflation) during January of 2026 grew 0.04%.
Consumer prices at national level increased by 0.12%
During January of 2026, the Consumer Price Index at National level registered an increase of 0.12% compared to December of 2025 and in the last twelve months (February 2025 – January 2026) reached 1.51%. This behavior is based in the increase observed in the consumption divisions of Foods and non-alcoholic beverages (0.29%), Restaurants and hotels and Goods and different services (0.26%, each one), Furniture, household items (0.23%), Recreation and culture (0.12%), Alcoholic beverages and tobacco and Clothing items and footwear (0.11% each one), Education (0.07%), Health (0.06%), Accommodation, water, electricity, gas (0.04%) and Communications (0.02%). On the other hand, it decreased the price the division of Transportation (-0.39%).
Variation of prices by cities
During the month under analysis, twenty-three cities of the twenty-six where the Consumer Price Index is calculated, reported increase of prices. The highest variations were observed in the cities of Puerto Maldonado (0.54%), Iquitos (0.52%), Puno (0.46%), Moquegua and Cerro de Pasco (0.41% each one). Meanwhile, the cities with downward prices were Cajamarca (-0.05%), Huaraz (-0.14%) and Chimbote (-0.19%).
Wholesale prices at national level increased 0.07%
During the month of January of 2026, Wholesale Price Index grew 0.07% compared to December of 2025. This behavior is based in the increase of prices of national products, mainly, agriculture (sweet potato, tomato, Orange, potato, olluco, yuca, onion, paddy rice and starchy maize) and livestock (live chicken, beef cattle, swine, guinea pig, and ovine cattle). Meanwhile, the price of manufacturing products decreased (steel profiles, Diesel oil, construction rods, nails, roof bricks, liquefied petroleum gas, cotton yarn, industrial wheat flour and canned fish in fillet); and fishing (Bonito, horse mackerel, hake and Cabrilla fish).
On the other hand, the prices of imported goods fell, due to the reduction in manufactured products (Disel oil, PVC resins, carbon black, polypropylene resins soybean crude oil and automobiles) imported agriculture products, such as lentils, non-carded cotton, wheat and hard yellow corn.
Machinery and equipment prices decreased 0.16%
During the month under analysis, Price Index of Machinery and Equipment decreased by 0.16% compared to the last month of 2025. This result responds to the fall in the exchange rate that basically impact in the prices of machinery and equipment for agriculture (tractors), followed by transportation (road tractor for semitrailer, vehicles for transportation of goods and oil filters); industry; industry (forklift, laptop computers, front bulldozing and wheel loaders); and other machinery and equipment (electromedical equipment and different electricity meters).
About capital goods of national origin, these showed an increase, specifically in the machinery for transportation (oil filters and fuel filters) and industry (welding machines, liquid pumps and propane gas cylinders), dimmed by lower prices in other machinery (nets for a catch and clinical beds-stretchers of medical treatment), meanwhile that the agriculture machinery did not registered variation.
Construction material prices reduced by 0.03%
During January of 2026, Price Index of Construction Materials in Lima Metropolitan area decreased by 0.03% compared to December of 2025, due to the negative behavior observed in four of the ten groups that made up the indicator: tiles and mosaics (wall and floor coating); metallics (black wire, LAC and LAF steel sheets, construction rods and nails); aggregates (mainly concrete); and glasses (templated glasses).
On the other hand, it increased the price the electric supplies (power cables, fixed installations and general use, associated to the increase of copper); concrete structures (wood-fiber slats); bricks (Pandereta and king kong bricks); tubes and plastic accessories (PVC tubes for water and water and sewerage accessories); binder (Portland cement type I); and woods (Tornillo, oak and Cachimbo wood).
